FACES FROM THE GREEK RESISTANCE
1996
MEMORY OF DEATH, MEMORY OF LIFE

(200 pages, 30X23 cm.)

Buried memories of the German Occupation of Greece and the pain experienced by those who lived through it are brought to the surface and captured brilliantly by Johanna Weber's lens. In this book Weber manages to represent the innermost feelings of the victims of the Occupation and the imprint these dark years has left on their lives. Her portraits are spontaneous, natural and simple, paying scant attention to the formal rules of photography. These photographs are accompanied by brief commentary from former members of the Resistance. This is a remarkable project and an important historical document.

"My main reason for undertaking this project is the fact that I am German. I wanted to understand the impression the German Occupation (1941-1944) has left on Greece, up to the present day. I spoke to about 65 people, victims and members of the Greek Resistance, who shared their memories of WWII and the consequences it had for their lives with me."
